My name’s Paul, and I’ve been gold prospecting since the early ’80s.

Back then, I didn’t find much at all — just a lot of red dirt, heat, and stubborn hope. But everything changed when my dad, Martin Meaney, pegged a lease called Cashmans, northwest of Meekatharra — the site of a unique crystalline gold mine discovery in Western Australia. Dad even made the front cover of Gold, Gem & Treasure magazine for the find, and that’s when I really caught the gold bug.

I still remember the excitement of that first piece — the flies, the squeal of Dad’s old detector, and his grin when that tiny flash of yellow showed through the dirt. That moment hooked me for life.

Since then, I’ve spent countless days out bush and been lucky enough to dig up some beautiful nuggets — some small, a few proper clunkers — and every one reminds me why this hobby gets under your skin. You never forget that first glint in the scoop.
